Well written story that takes the reader on a journey from the present to the past as they try to solve the mystery of The Parker Inheritance. The author does a nice job showing today’s reader how racial relations are the same/different as they were in the past. It offers the opportunity for open discussion with students. That is just one of the topics this novel touches. I see many children looking to history, The Westing Game, math & word puzzles & so much more. Can’t wait to share this novel with my class.
31/2 stars from me. This book is a dual timeline story. The past timeline is FANTASTIC. It's the reason I kept reading. The present timeline however was much less engaging and felt somewhat forced to this reader - as though an MG present-tense storyline was invented only to tell a past tense YA+ story.
This book is beautiful. Johnson's portrayal of racism and homophobia—both in the past and the present—and the hate and hurt they cause didn't shy away from horrible truths while at the same time providing a sense of hope for the future. Highly recommend!
