More reading as part of a grad program for school counselors and LPCs. While I can’t say I’d pick it up and read it on a whim, it’s definitely one of the best written textbooks in this grad program so far. It’s a broad overview of multicultural issues in counseling, mostly emphasizing one cultural group per chapter. While I would like more detail and differentiation, it wouldn’t have been appropriate in this type of survey text. With the exception of only one or two chapters, the editor did a good job of selecting engagingly as well as sensitively and informatively written chapters.

We used this text in my graduate level diversity class. This text is a good introduction to working with diverse groups. The chapters are set up so that each chapter provides an overview of a different group (Women, Asian-Americans, African Americans, Native Americans, etc.). The only thing that bothered me was the editor's adamant usage of the phrases "hers or his" and "she and he" (rather than "his or hers" and "he and she," as it's usually said). I understand they are trying to be culturally sensitive, but I just thought it was pushing it too much.

I purchased this for my Cultural Competence in the Helping Professions course. I have always considered myself a culturally aware person, but have often struggled with what is called "Cultural Competency" because I think many of the things that you need to know to be "culturally competent" involve what I feel are a lot of stereotypes. However, this book addresses that way of thinking, and I thought this was both informative and helpful. Anyone interested in working with people who are different than you (male, female, straight, gay, old, young, black, white, etc.) and want to do the best you can at making the person feel welcome and that they belong, should read this book.I started purchasing as many textbooks as possible on the Kindle because I have found that it saves a significant amount of money. Last semester I took 4 classes, and saved over $200 because I bought all my textbooks on Kindle instead of purchasing Used copies from the University Bookstore. This textbook is one of the best Kindle books I have seen so far in terms of formatting and ease of use for Kindle.Good luck!

Excellent format and definitions, but also very stereotypical of a multicultural text - being onesided of current cultural "problems" and the basis for them. I would like to see a multicultural text that will value ALL ethnic/cultural people equally without constantly placing blame on specific groups of people and historical events to explain current cultural behavior of extreme individuals and social problems. I would like to have a text that proposes more ideas to realistically problem solvE cultural dilemmas instead of just explaing them. We live in a mefia culture of extremes.......but most of us live our lives somewhere in between, caring for our families, working our jobs, with the ability to speak freely and trying to "do the right thing".

I don't mind used books, but receiving broken pieces is different. The CD that came with it was broken in half when I opened the box. The book itself is ok, but has more marks in it than I have seen with a "good" rating. This is the worst condition for a textbook that I have ever received. The binding is even coming off.

Great book, but through no fault of the seller, I bought the wrong edition. Buyers, please note that when following links within Amazon, they may direct you from the edition you WANTED to a previous edition when clicking links... double-check the edition before buying! Also check that the seller accepts exchanges or returns and what their restocking policy is before making your purchase. All that aside, the book is well-written and has great case studies.

Great textbook and overall a good book on pretty munch every culture. It dives in to the things that are below the ethnicities. Things like spirituality, marriage, love, and overall how to approach each culture as a counselor, very helpful and beneficial!

Discussing culture is very difficult as our globalized world becomes simultaneously smaller and larger, but this book does well to educate future counselors on what ethnic and racial stereotypes, prejudices, and oppression their clients may (or may not) face. It is important to remind yourself that acknowledging stereotypes is not the same as encouraging their use. The text consistently reminds the reader to remember that each person is an individual first, which I find to be extremely important. The text does appear to be targeted toward a white audience, but I do not take issue with this because the majority of persons within the counseling field (in the U.S., at the least) are, in fact, white.
