It's a lovely little version of of this beautiful story/poem. However, I bought this edition because reviews said the illustrations were amazing. Because there's no view of the inside of this book I went on the good advice of those who love the illustrations. THERE ARE NO ILLUSTRATIONS, lovely, amazing, NONE!!! There's just snow flakes printed on each page like the cover.Amazon, please stop lumping reviews for different products together. Really, with all the advanced technology available I would think that one very helpful thing would be possible.

I've been giving this little book as a Christmas gift for nearly 50 years. It suits almost anyone who celebrates, or has celebrated, Christmas. This version is illustrated with wood-block cut art that appeals to me more than any other illustrations of this tale ever have. The non-rhyming verse goes on and on and on ... It is difficult to read aloud. Nonetheless, it's worth practicing to read aloud because it's an awesome in-the-trust-sense -of-the-word, and often amusing, slice of bygone life that warms the hearts of oldsters, and has brought giggles out of the tummies of discerning two-year-olds. The price is modest, so as a gift this can be given without implying any obligation in return. I love its size, weight, presentation, and jaunty recall of snowballing, cats on silent-snow-covered wharfs, rolling seas, fumbling firemen, silly boys in wool caps with candy cigarettes dangling from their lips, uncles snoring after huge family meals, and so much more ... Yes, I recommend it, and I hope to be buying and "gifting" it for another 50 years or so.

For many years I read this aloud to my high school classes on the last day before Christmas vacation when I found that real work was not productive. Reading Dylan Thomas had the effect of mesmerizing them while presenting an opportunity to learn a nice bit of poetry. I used a "bombilating' voice (Mrs. Protheroe's "gong bombilating") and loved reading it aloud; Still do read it aloud to myself1.

"A Childs Christmas in Wales" had become a Christmas tradition years ago, when ran across a 33rpm LP of Dylan Thomas reading this classic--it, along with Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows" chapter on Moles Christmas, replaced "Twas the Night..." with the kids some 40+ years past. Love having the written text to follow along, and being able to dwell on some of the more favorite phrasings. This is a small, nicely printed soft-bound volume, which stores with the now CD version of the original reading in the Christmas box until next year.

I agree this is a wonderful story. Not as good as Capote's "A Christmas Memory", but still a warm rememberance worth reading. My copy was in poor condition. Although not suitable to give as a gift, it is ok to set out during Christmas. The corners on the front cover are worn making the book look used.....which it may be. Or possibly from the way it was just thrown into a box with some other stuff. Merry Christmas

I needed this lovely book in order to further appreciate the beautifully filmed movie based on it: A Child's Christmas in Wales. I didn't want to miss one, evocative word of Denholm Elliott's wonderful narration. What a treat to delve in the richness of Dylan Thomas' poetry! As it turns out, Chris Raschka's illustrations furthered my appreciation for the story, portraying that wild, imaginative abandon of childhood.A treat, when Thomas describes a Useless Present: "a celluloid duck that made, when you pressed it, a most unducklike sound, a mewing moo that an ambitious cat might make who wished to be a cow..." I've known cats like this, black & white cow-cats, who poke around, eating grass, and moo-mewing.The poetry of the narrative will pull you in: "All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged, fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hand in the snow and bring out whatever I can find. In goes my hand into that wool-white bell-tongued ball of holidays resting on the rim of the carol-singing sea . . ."One things leads to another, you also may enjoy the lyrical film: The Secret of Roan Inish.

I purchased A Child's Christmas in Wales because I was tasked with the job of finding a Christmas book for my book group's December meeting. Other reviewers said it's suitable for adults. I agree. The writing is beautiful and the story surprisingly funny. I highly recommend this sweet, uplifting story. At times, I found a sentence just a touch twisty and confusing but, although I think adults will appreciate it more, children should enjoy the story and understand what's happening from the context. It's worth purchasing a copy to keep for annual rereads. My only complaint is that Amazon sent me a crunched copy. I could have returned it but decided not to bother. I will return damaged books in the future. After putting it under a pile of heavy books for several weeks, the book is flatter but will never look like a new book and it *was* purchased new.
