The author claims that this book provides “a reality based opinion and rational approachâ€. He (presuming it’s written by a ‘he’, as he states the name may be a pseudonym) TOTALLY refutes that claim by providing a far off base straw man describing a carbon tax as “a tax on every living being on earthâ€. There are 10 states (soon to be 11) which have ‘cap-and-invest’ laws. NONE of them has ANYTHING to do with carbon in living things; only carbon emitted into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) or methane (CH4) from major point sources of such pollution. He thus establishes firmly that he is completely unhinged from facts relative to the climate change debate. HIs next major argument is that, at 400 parts per million (PPM), CO2 is FAR too small a portion of the atmosphere to matter — per ‘common sense’. The simple argument that really small means doesn’t matter is bogus. For example, as little as 10 PPM/KG of body mass of tetrodoxotin is lethal for 50% of the population. Small quantities DO matter greatly - depending upon how they effect the overall mass. This is NOT to say that CO2 is toxic in anything like these small quantities, only to indicate that you need to understand the mechanism of effect to know what the impact is. He asks how accurate climate models are, but never really defines what he means by accuracy, so the question is unanswerable. He asks how it is known how much CO2 in the atmosphere is due to human activity. The answer is somewhat complex involving different isotopes of the constituents of the CO2, but he never mentions that. He states that water (H2O) is a stronger greenhouse gas than CO2, and is in much higher abundance. While this is true, he fails to note that water’s typical duration in the atmosphere is generally quite limited, as cooling causes it to precipitate out as rain/snow. Water vapor is concentrated in the mid-latitudes. As it moves from the warmer latitudes up in the atmosphere and Northerly where is it colder, it precipitates out. The polar latitudes are quite dry. This effect results in the warming due to CO2 being much more pronounced in the polar latitudes, which are experiencing the highest rates of warming. CO2, unlike water which precipitates out rapidly, and methane which is very reactive (methane is natural gas/LPG/LNG and burns quite well), dwells in the atmosphere for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years unless it is brought down into contact with the ocean or land based plant life. This surface layer is a very small percent of the total atmospheric column, and mixing is rather limited. Thus CO2’s considerable importance. He asserts that the fundamental characteristic for greenhouse gas impact on the warming of the climate is heat capacity. This is incorrect. Heat capacity is how much energy it takes to warm a quantity of a given material (gas here) by one degree. In fact, the critical characteristic for greenhouse gases is how much they reradiate heat, thus capturing it and keeping it in the lower atmosphere. Thus, every significant argument the author offers up is wrong. This book is trash. If you really want to learn about Climate Change, download one of the IPCC assessment reports, the 2007 one having one of the best overviews.
The author claims to have a background in science and engineering, but the mistakes in this book are so glaring that a 10 year old of average intelligence would see right through them. He seems to confuse a tax on carbon emissions with a tax on carbon itself, going so far as to suggest that dog owners would be taxed because dogs contain carbon. I can only hope that was intended to be a joke. Then there's the argument that CO2 couldn't be a dangerous pollutant because it only comprises 0.04% of the atmosphere. If the author believes this, I humbly suggest he mix 0.04% bleach in his morning coffee and assess the results for himself.
Your essay would benefit greatly if you would put lots of graphic illustrations of the key quantities cited for the great masses of people who can't visualize numerical quantities. For example, visualize 100 percent of the atmosphere as a hundred meter or yard playing field and total CO2, man-made CO2,water vapor etc.as lengths that an innumer ate can relate to.
I ordered this along with Uninhabitable Earth, hoping to get a balance of differing views on climate change. This so called book is a joke - it hardly qualifies as a pamphlet at just 38 pages, printed in 14 point type with 1.5 spaced lines. If you use the misinformation presented here to rebut anyone's assertion that man-made climate change is real, you will end up making a real fool of yourself. Utter garbage - don't waste your money!
This book lays out facts about CO2 and our atmosphere in a clear, concise manner. The author points out the specific heat capacity and portion of the air which are scientifically established not only for CO2 but for other portions of the air. He does not offer solutions but he does point it would be much cheaper and more effective to seed clouds that reduce CO2 emmisions. Very understandable educational and entertaining.
This discussion is exactly what I have been looking for since this consensus nonsense started. The facts on climate change explained simply and not with name calling.
The book as a whole is good in that it does present some of the basic questions that should be asked when discussing science and specifically global warning. One flaw in what is presented is that the author refers to "heat capacity" but presents his arguments based upon data for "specific heat capacity". He difference being that specific heat capacity is per kilogram of mass per mole. The mass of a mole of oxygen is about 16g and the mass of a mole of carbon-dioxide is about 29g. Therefore the actual heat capacity of CO2 is significantly higher than that of O2, by about 29/16. However that aside, the author does raise some interesting questions that need to be addressed, especially with regard to the accuracy of computer models.
