Naturalist, wildlife photographer and writer Stan Tekiela is the author of more than 175 field guides, nature books, children’s books, wildlife audio CDs, puzzles and playing cards, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti in the United States. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 25 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and Canada. Stan Tekiela's field guides are very easy to use - great for kids or adults! The pages have color dots easily seen as you fan the pages. Go to the color of the bird and search by size. Within each color birds are arranged from smallest to largest. Each bird has a full page, full color image opposite information about the bird - size, range, and more If the male/female look very different, there is even a small inset of the other bird (full page under the appropriate color). There's also a nice index. I have used it for myself, with elementary classes, and given it as a gift to pre-schoolers who love to use the color coding to find birds at the feeder. It's small enough for small hands or to be put in a small day pack but big enough to have great photos and detailed information. His field guides for other states are just as good.
I purchased this book for my children to aid in identifying our backyard birds. The book contains beautiful color photographs as well as descriptions of each bird. I've had this book for years and it is lovingly showing wear due to the number of times it's been used. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again.
This is a perfect field guide for Minnesota birds. It has helped me identify every bird I've seen. Especially nice are the maps which show where/when the birds should be according to the season, and what types of foods/feeders each type of bird likes. It's been spot-on.
This is a great bird guide for the new birder or the casual observer. Unlike many other identification guides, which rely on your previous knowledge of bird species, this bird starts the identification process the way "normal" people do: By color. "Oh I saw this cool green bird!" your friend might say to you, well, turn to the green bird section and start flipping through. Another thing that I like about this field guide are the photographs. They show the male and female of the birds, but not always what it looks like in flight, which is a definite drawback. What makes this book great for the beginner also makes it less useful for a more avid birder. There is less information, and generally birds are photographed in stationary positions i.e. not flying.
I bought this book for my brother in law (I can only imagine you can guess where he lives) I am am a birder somewhere between amateur- avid. In a recent visit to Texas my brother in law expressed an interest in bird watching but the Bird Field Guides we're daunting to him with the vast number of birds, he didn't know how find a bird before it flew off! I wanted to share the joy of birds with him and purchased a book that was specific to his home. The birds in the book are categorize buy bird colors which makes it easy to zero in and made an id before it flies away.
Like this book because it is specific to Minnesota. It is short and compact. I don't have to look through thousands of birds to find what I am looking for. Also love that it is sorted by color -- brown birds, yellow birds, etc. How well do I like it? I keep replacing it when the one I am using wears out. This is my third copy.
This guide does what none of my others do. It will devote an entire full color page to the female. They are sometimes astonishingly different. I found this extremely helpful.
We are studying birds in school and this book has really helped us identify many of the more common and some not-so-common birds in our area. I like how the book is laid out. It's colorful and the pictures are great for helping id birds and their mates. It is also organized by color so kids are able to find the birds fast. We get lots of birds on our feeder and this book has been great for quickly finding the types of birds that are in our yard. It also has other helps to such as what kinds of nests the birds use, where they are located in MN, color of eggs and how many, as well as notes from the author about each bird. This book is a great help to anyone who needs a little help identifying local birds.
