Special Forces veteran Nick Brokhausen joined the SOG on his second tour in Vietnam, and took part in some of the most dangerous missions of the war, deep in enemy territory. After Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen has led an interesting life, which has included work in security projects in a number of countries. He now runs a tech company and an armoring company.

I purchased this hardcover to replace my paperback copy, which got passed around so much it is in poor shape. It has been my honor and privilege to have met Nick and his brothers in arms and listen to their exploits in Vietnam. To many the stories seem unreal, but listening to their harrowing experiences one can only see that the dark humor in Nick's book is only a way to cover the horrors and fear they experienced while on missions.Imagine having being dropped into an LZ and expending all your ammunition in a few minutes and praying that the extraction will be successful, or that your team is inserted into an area with an overwhelming enemy force and you are expected to gather intelligence and safely make it home to base.This book is an insight to the lives of the MACV-SOG recon teams written by one of many who lived it. I have read some reviews that challenge the account. I highly doubt those who wrote them actually lived this, nor would have the cajones to even try.A VERY good read.

The author is one of few men who have a 12" GI Joe type figure made to honor him. then he writes a book and it is quite the ride! Very humorous and possible embellished but the characters are very believable that such a unit would keep these creatures in VietNam to save the population at home! I have read many SOG books some fiction some nonfiction and this is co-written by Robin Moore/Williams!! I can't stop reading it! It is the antheisis of "The Green Berets" by John Wayne and Robin Moore. Good action but some wrong details 12.5 vs 12.7mm MGs? Some very small details but a lot of name dropping and if you know your SOG you know these guys. Love the intra group friction between 10th and 5th. And the obvious distain for REMFs even in the SF community you had them!! What a hoot! Read it, you'll love it and reread it to catch any missed details.
All you need to know is that Vietnam era Special Forces we incredibly brave, and just as incredibly insane. Crazy escapades and close shaves combine to make compelling, interesting and fun read. Well worth the price of admission.
Truly an excellent and immersing read. Lots of action with a large dash of "Catch-22" Very humorous and portrays the lengths these heros went to blow of steam after narrowly surviving small unit combat. The SOG groups had a 100% casualty rate, and were thus allowed to diverge from the usual military discipline. However, the SOG units were the best fighters our military had, and were given leway to be a little crazy. Truly one of the best Vietnam War books out there (and I have read MANY).
Buy this book.... this was our best youth sent to war, and he came home. Vietnam wasnt worth 58,000 of Nick not coming home.
Its fast pace for the type of book it is. I found it to be emotional without being emotional. For those who want a view into the world of SOG (Black OPs) Vietnam, I highly recommend this book. For those who want to learn about the Special Ops, I recommend you start here. It doesn't glorify what they did nor does it downplay it. One can see hint of life on a fire base. In this you will see they trained hard though this isn't full of details as to the mechanics of there training, they fought hard. They lived in a world where the odds were 160-1 against them. this is one book where you can see and listen in on the th0ughts of the author. I highly recommend it as a 1st primer for those who are into Special Ops.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author wrote as someone who has been there, done that, and want publishing to further his political career or impress someone. The bill touched me deeply and was a rare inside look at what I suspect was the actual war for many of our soldiers.
