I’m a pretty forgiving reader. Plot similarities, flat characters, misused words, and schmaltzy endings are to be expected in the genre of historical romance. The problems here exceeded that tenfold. I was annoyed at the action-less and cumbersome style of half the book being characters talking to themselves, both in quotes AND in italics. Make up your mind. Then came the awkward phrasing and the off usage like prepositions at the end of sentences. And yes, the common theme of women being oppressed was approached heavy-handedly, no subtlety. Finally the kicker... the characters changed names. Selina became Rosa at a dinner party. Ophelia falls for Simon but then raves about her love for Thomas. Later Simon is the creepy foil to the hero. The characters didn’t do this like some crazy Shakespeare play. No! The author (s) simply forgot who she was writing about. OMG. hire a freaking editor.:(

The story begins with tension filled pages, rebuke, chastisement and embarrassment. The lead female character, Selina, is twenty years old and has a younger sister, Ophelia, who is sixteen. Selina is an unorthodox young woman who loves to draw in nature more than pursuing singing or piano. She speaks to servants as friends and respects them. However, Selina has a sharp tongue, jumps to conclusions and is quick to anger. She meets Alexander Russell, 6th Baronet of Chesterfield and her life turns upside down. The chemistry between Selina and Alex is undeniable and strong. Selina meets Alex under unusually casual circumstances. They exchange first names only. Alex was exercising his horses when he came upon her. Because Alex was dressed in commoners clothes, Selina mistook him for stable groom. Later at a ball she realized he was the Baronet who lived adjacent to her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Edmund where her family was staying. Selina immediately became angry at Alex because when they met, he did not tell her he was a baronet. She felt all men with a title were selfish, arrogant and privileged. She disdained titled men. She thought Alex was just like the rest of his class and she felt he lied to her. So, she gave him the cold shoulder and removed herself from him. Alex was indeed perplexed by her. But still he perused her despite their many unfortunate encounters. This is a delightful story full of angst, shock, jealousy, rumors, self-awareness, pity, forgiveness and love. I enjoyed reading it and do recommend it.

We can be contrary, one day, silly the next, and not bearable the next.....For me the best authors have had a vast array of folks they have learned from. Having lived in several countries I feel very lucky for the experiences. And the most important thing I learned, starting at 16 years in boarding school in Montraux. And having students from all over the world. What did I learn? We all hurt, we all need friendships, and love and we make out of our lives. I think authors, the ones who create wonderful characters are my favorites.Ms Barton is a delight, I have never felt that I didn't get a fun story, well written and I always look for new books. We who stalk the book filled halls of Amazon are are lucky. I live away in a tiny town so I am so grateful to be able to read. no Library and tv? Not so loved. So thank you Ms Barton.....You and 3 or 4 others are life savers! Thank you for your books, your humor and brilliant brain. Thank you so much!!!

Bridget Barton retains her crown as the Queen of “Clean and Sweet” Regency. And, as usual, her main lady is a little less than sweet.Selina has a brain, and dreams. She doesn’t care much for the trappings that come along with her class. Most of all, she has it set in her head that any man she is expected to marry isn’t worth anything. Enter Alex. He too hasn’t much use for the way he is to present himself, least of all the fact that he is expected to produce an heir. A close second is the way the women come after him for his title and nothing else. There are immediate sparks when the two meet. Though they almost pale in comparison to Selina’s reaction when she finds out that Alex isn’t a commoner, but a nobleman. How will these two come to their senses, and come together, the way they truly want to?Bridget Barton always takes you through the paces with her books. Selina is headstrong, almost to the point of silliness. That doesn’t keep Alex from pursuing her, and figuring her out. You watch the characters grow, and learn, with a supporting cast that explains so much as to why they are who they are. You’ll enjoy this one.

Selina's parents and aunt were hoping to find a match for this carefree, artist who was a little too outspoken and intelligent during her first two unsuccessful seasons. So attempts are made at her aunt's home where they are staying for a while. However, she meets a Baronet on her own while out sketching and believes him to be a kindly commoner out walking horses for the Baron. After humiliation of finding out he merely did not correct her reasonable unexpressed presumption, she is angry at him and pushes him away (as her aunt wished anyway), though her heart wishes otherwise. He is determined to see if she is right for him due to the electricity between them. She is different and he likes that! Then, her sister Ophelia meets the perfect man for her. Why couldn't life be so simple for outspoken Selina. This was a fun read with great characters and they share a deep appreciation of their servants and respect for all people and were ever so kind and lovable, delightful people. Enjoyed this read a lot!

What's going on here? This book is a mess. The Editor's name is not listed, I suspect that the author didn't even re-read manuscript sending this for publication. I am completely appalled that, in order to write this review, in fairness, I felt that I had to read the whole "book". What an insult to the reading public.
