Dave Gibbons, a Will Eisner Hall of Fame nominee, is one of the most famous comic creators working today, with over 40 years experience, having worked for every major publisher in the US and UK. Script writing, Logo design, lettering, coloring, character design and visual storytelling are all covered. Dave Gibbons also shows respect to the trail-blazers of the medium as he cites his influences.Highly recommended.

I got this book for my son for Christmas. I looked it over when it came and it's a real nice book. Nice and big, with lots of sketches/illustrations. My son was absolutely thrilled with it.

Good insight into comic books.

As a professional cartoonist and teacher of drawing comics, I've read countless books on the subject, and HOW COMICS WORK is among the best; an excellent and valuable addition to my library. Clearly and attractively laid out (SO important in how-to books), and packed with sharp insights from a seasoned master of the medium, this book guides you sensibly through the process of creating comic books: from script-writing to visual storytelling to lettering, coloring, and overall book design.Gibbons's advice is cogent and to the point, describing smart methods that will help sharpen your game and save you time and trouble. Also included are several "influences" pages, showcasing the work of great creators Gibbons has learned from over the years. And, of course, there are abundant examples throughout of his own beautiful work -- both finished and in-process -- to helpfully illustrate his points.Dense but highly readable, this is a book I'll return to and peruse often -- and so should you!

I was given a chance to review this book by the publisher and I have to say this is the best book I have ever read on the process of creating comics.Dave Gibbons give us his perspective on writing, drawing, lettering, color and every aspect that goes into creating a comic. As a long time fan (over 50 years), a former retailer of comics and a collector of original art I have always had a fascination with the actual process. Most comic books are a collaborative process and that means the process changes from almost comic to comic. The Marvel comics from the Silver Age were often created via the marvel way - which often meant the artist took an idea from a writer and created 20 pages of story and art. Now 50 plus years later trying to figure out who created what is a nightmare for the lawyers. Other times the artist are drawing from a full script. EC Comics were often nightmares for the artist as they had to try and fit in a lot of story in often crammed panels. Today most companies employ a full script and the writer lays out page by page and panel by panel. This allows often little freedom for the artist if they are working on a book with a tight schedule as different pages may be done by different artists. I'm digressing from what this book is about - but it shows my love for understanding the process. Dave gives us a wonderful breakdown of each part of the process and how he approaches comics. It provides insight into not only his process but how come parts of the rest of the process works for many comics. It is replete with tons of artwork and examples making it a visual feast as well as a book that illuminates.Simply put this book is worth the bang for the buck if you enjoy trying to understand how comic books work. Wonderfully put together and an enjoyable read.

No doubt, David Gibbons is a gifted comics genius, but Ted Williams, the greatest hitter in baseball and last player to bat over.400 never made a solid coach. It did not work for me.

That said, the internet is awash with material that can fill in the gaps. While I’d love to see Dave Gibbons expand on his practices, that’s not what he gives us here.This is a process book. Another Amazon reviewer wrote (with some frustration) that it should have been titled “How Comics Work — for Dave Gibbons.” There’s a lot of truth there, and perhaps the title does oversell it a little. But it doesn’t change the fact that Gibbons is a master of the form. We should absolutely want to know how comics work for one person, if the person in question is uniquely and intensely talented.“How Comics Work” has a great layout and structure. I can easily imagine an artists finding themselves stumped mid-process—maybe working a tricky page payout—and saying “What was it that Gibbons said?” and then jumping to that chapter.His examples are well-curated, pulling from a long back catalog of titles. Obviously we all would have enjoyed a “how I made Watchmen” book, but it only gets the occasional reference. Maybe it’s a usage rights issue. Maybe he’s just sick of being known as “the Watchmen guy.” Either way, I enjoyed being introduced for the first time to some hidden gems.While Gibbons’s advice on character design, sketching, and all things analog is solid, he’s on shakier ground when it comes to digital. This is where co-author Tim Pitcher or an editor could have stepped in a little to provide some cover, or perhaps the whole issue could have been sidestepped.“How Comics Work” is not the be-all end-all book on making comics. I doubt such a book exists. But it’s a powerful reference tool and source of inspiration for the motivated comics creator.

Super steamy and fun holiday read. I don’t normally read holiday books but when this author writes them I devour everything she writes so I made an exception. Samantha is down on her luck and makes the trek home for Thanksgiving meal with her dreadful step-mother and creepy step-brother. On the upside a dark and good-looking man “rescues” her from an awkward conversation with her ex. Just to find out he is one of her creepy step-brother’s colleagues. Just when she thinks it can’t get anymore awkward she slips into the hot tub with one of step-brother’s other colleagues but that takes steamy turn she, Reece and Gavin really enjoy. A perfect short and steamy holiday romance!

Samantha is toppling over failing at every turn. It all begins with the ridiculously douchebag cheating boyfriend, then the loss of her job, and her building being condemn is just way too much for her to deal with. Hence, her decision to spend Thanksgiving with her step-mom and reptilian step-brother instead of being alone.But then her ex showed up and engaged to the woman he cheated on her with, and rescue came unexpectedly out of left field. Reece, unbeknownst to her decides to come to her rescue and from there on with his friend Gavin, it's the best Thanksgiving ever.

What the heck was that? A waste of $1.99 and a half hour of my time. If books with no substance, no real story sell so well, hell, maybe I will try my hand at it! Especially if I don't have worry about needing an editor! This is my first and last book by this author!

This is a short story with a happy ending. Samantha has had a lot of bed luck. Her apartment is condemned, she has lost her job suddenly, and goes to her step mothers for Thanksgiving. For mature readers.

I absolutely loved reading my arc copy of Sharing Samantha by Madison Faye. Im always blown away by her work. This book is off the charts hot as hell. The story had me completely hooked and i couldn't put it down. The characters were instantly loveable with a wonderful connection. This is a definite must read.

We have all had ( well most of us ) a really horrible holiday at one of our relatives homes that we didn’t want to attend. If I would have ever had a holiday end in the way Sam’s ended I would go to every party I was invited to.Such a cute story from a really good author.

Took me two days to get through it and I had only a few pages of useful info. Over priced and lots of page filler.This could have been a 50 page book instead of 230 of useless drek,

Brendon Kane's book, One Million Followers, delivers on its promise and I am immersed in learning from this book. First, I must tell you that I have no idea what to do in the social media marketing world, I am a social worker and want to build a following for my children's life-skills business. I just assumed that I'd write some post and boost it and hope people would follow. Now, after reading this book, I'm very clear on my strategy, because this book is very clear on step by step instructions. The writing and organization of the book make sense, which is a great sign because the strategies in the book, on writing and being organized in your approach, are paramount to my success.I feel like I've discovered a secret recipe and am a bit surprised, happily, that Brendan is sharing his top-notch approach with the world. I will be launching my new business in March 2019 and will be implementing these strategies in early 2019 to gain a FB following. I will write a follow up review for everyone to let you all know how it goes. For now, I highly recommend this book. It has educated and changed the way I think about marketing in social media and gaining followers on FB.

I'm not usually a fan of celebrity biographies, but Robin Williams was something special--a singular talent whose intellect and wit that were off the charts. I may have seen only a handful of his movies and never watched more than a few episodes of Mork and Mindy, but if I saw he was going to be on a talk show, I seldom missed it.This exhaustively researched book,written by NY Times reporter Dave Itzkoff, delves into every aspect of Williams's life, from his lonely but privileged childhood, to his early successes and his later uneven career in films, to his demons, philandering and substance abuse and finally his gut-wrenching suicide after developing Lewy body dementia.In the public eye, Williams was larger than life, but in private he was an insecure little boy, desperate for adulation and attention and willing to do almost anything to get it. His judgment was often flawed, whether cheating on his wives, choosing to make movies that were duds, or descending into addiction at the expense of his family. At the same time, he was brilliant at stand-up and in the right roles, unforgettable on the big screen ("Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society," "Mrs. Doubtfire," and Good Will Hunting," for which he finally won an Academy Award).His career was in decline when he died, but, oh, the legacy he left!Robin is a behemoth of a book--439 pages of text, several more selected work and awards, and over 50 pages of notes.sourcing pretty much everything in the book. My concern about Mr. Itzkoff's 'Robin' was that the book would simply be a hagiography, because so little time has passed since Mr. Williams committed suicide. Emotions are likely still raw for many of the people who knew the comic genius when interviewed by the author. Glossing over Mr. Williams's less appealing qualities was a distinct possibility. Fortunately, Mr. Itzkoff shows a great deal of professionalism by giving a balanced portrayal.At 440 pages, the book is more an overview than a deeply in-depth work such as James Kaplan's two-volume biography about Frank Sinatra. I'd imagine that if anyone were to undertake such an exercise about Mr. Williams, a decade or so will have had to pass for a less misty-eyed evaluation. It is understandable. Mr. Itzkoff's portrayal shows the life of a true artist who, as his first wife states, was a stimulus junkie and a brilliant gentle soul. There is a lot to admire about the late Robin Williams and some aspects that are more sad than accusatory. His genius was unique but seemed to come along with some less than desirable traits of self-destruction. The biography covers such topics as his peripatetic childhood, comedy clubs, his rapid rise to stardom, methods behind his improvisation, his three marriages, the various reactions by critics to many of his movies, some details about the creation of his more successful films, the accusations of plagiarism, his relationship with famous friends like Billy Crystal, John Belushi, Christopher Reeves, and Richard Pryor, Comic Relief, becoming a parent, his idol Jonathan Winters, his philanthropy, and the creation of 'Mork & Mindy.' Mr. Williams's more destructive actions such as drug use and infidelities are touched upon but the author mostly avoids giving salacious details. The last thirty-five pages linger upon the reactions of Robin Williams's suicide, the diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, and the conflicts over his estate by his third wife and the Williams children.There is a great deal within 'Robin' that was news to me. Mr. Itzhoff has a nice clear writing style which made the book an enjoyable read. However, while the comic had his ups and downs, the last third of the biography becomes more and more melancholy. If the reader is anything like me, you will come away from 'Robin' with an appreciation of his genius and compassion as well as sad about his less admirable qualities. The humble artist was truly in a league of his own.

In his new biography "Robin," author Dave Itzkoff relates an anecdote in which while he is doing a story on Robin Williams back in the day, he and Robin visit a comic book store together - an offer that Itzkoff initially doesn't take too seriously as that kind of thing is not uncommon with celebrities. However, when the two do go, a customer bumps into Robin and stares open-mouthed at coming face-to-face with a legend in the flesh. In "Robin," Itzhoff gives fans and just those who are interested in learning more about this unique, mercurial comedian/actor a multi-dimensional look that often makes you feel as if you are really meeting Robin in the flesh so to speak. Using extensive interviews with Robin's family, friends and colleagues, Itzhoff traces Robin's development from a young stand-up comedian, to a TV star thanks to "Mork and Mindy," to a struggling actor who at last made it big in Hollywood. In addition, Itzhoff portrays a man who was a flawed individual but one who constantly strove to be better - whether it was as a husband, a father or a friend.Takeaways: The son of a well-to-do executive who had two older half-siblings who did not live with him growing up, Robin had a somewhat isolated youth, especially as his family frequently moved (although he apparently had no problems making friends). After the family moved to California while Robin was a teenager, he found himself exposed to a much more liberal environment in school. Here he also began to consider becoming an actor, a career that his father was not thrilled about - at least not unless his son came up with a practical fallback. Because of this, as Itzhoff notes, Robin saw the concept of "family" and "home" as fluid - it could be wherever you chose to make it. Like many artists, Robin also struggled at times with mood swings, substance abuse, insecurity and envy, although he took steps throughout his life to seek help and generally did not let personal resentment stand in the way of supporting other comics and actors. As "Robin" also meticulously traces the ups and downs of Robin's acting career, which was a decidedly rocky road, it likely won't seem surprising to the reader that the subject struggled to overcome these obstacles. Finally, "Robin" takes a look at the actor's fatal illness which would be posthumously diagnosed as Lewy's body dementia, and the final days leading up to his death. Overall: "Robin" is a well-researched (sometimes a bit too extensive) portrayal of a complex man who changed many lives for the merrier and from whose example to seize the day (like his "Dead Poets Society" character),we could all do well to follow.
