Masada, by Neil Waldman

From Publishers Weekly

Waldman (The Golden City) returns to Israel for this tribute to the legendary citadel, encompassing over 2000 years of history. A towering fortress built on a rock plateau in what is now the Negev desert, Masada was the last remaining Jewish stronghold in the Holy Land until it fell to the Romans in 73 C.E. In a frankly partisan approach, the author traces the history of Masada, built by Herod in the first century B.C.E., to the Masada Archaeological Expedition of 1963. Waldman is most compelling when he recreates pivotal scenes in detail, such as the last stand of the Zealots as they attempt to ward off the Romans from Masada. Unfortunately, readers may find much of the history confusing, as important figures are mentioned offhandedly (for example, six brief paragraphs cover Josephus Flavius; yet Flavius, a Jewish leader who joined the Romans, is later cited as the author of the pivotal account that led to the rediscovery of Masada in the 19th century), and obvious omissions may prove troubling to readers (e.g., in the opening chapter, set in Jerusalem in 66 C.E., hundreds of persecuted Jews hang from wooden crosses, yet there is not even a passing reference to Christ and his followers). The most vexing gap occurs when the text mentions "Israel's greatest archaeologist, Yigael Yadin," in a chapter set in 1838, then leaps ahead to Yadin's expedition in 1963. More successful is Waldman's use of halftone paintings, which effectively convey a feeling of antiquity as well as the austerity and drama of the desert landscape. While this history may pique readers' interest in the controversial fortress, they may well walk away from this book with more questions than answers. Ages 10-up. From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Built by King Herod during the first century B.C.E. as a stronghold to protect himself and his followers from the Romans, the fortress of Masada still stands on top of a steep plateau in the Judean wilderness. Waldman has written a concise account of the escape to Masada of a group of Jewish Zealots and of their valiant stand against the massive, well-equipped Roman legions of the emperor Vespasian. The standoff ended in 71 C.E. when the Roman army forced slaves to build a huge ramp of earth and rocks, pulled an enormous assault tower into position, and overpowered the last remnant of Jewish civilization in the Middle East. The narrative is based on the detailed firsthand account recorded by Josephus Flavius, a young Jewish leader who swore allegiance to the Romans in order to stay alive. Waldman dramatizes the story by adding dialogue-a tactic that gives a fictional quality to the otherwise carefully researched text. Descriptions of the rediscovery and excavation of the site are also included. Dramatic illustrations and two large maps, all in charcoal shades of acrylic and india ink, show realistic scenes, many of them painted from photos, relief sculptures, and artifacts found during the excavation of Masada. This is the only available account for young people of the Roman wars against the Jews of Jerusalem and Masada.Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OHCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Even the most enthusiastic student of military history has unwittingly stumbled into a meeting engagement with a book that is as fun to read as sawdust is to eat. I recall reading one book about the Okinawa campaign that contained enough statistics to make my head spin but never once gave insight into what it would have felt like to be on the ground. Nothing kills enthusiasm for learning about the past faster than boredom.Thankfully Myke Cole brilliantly circumvents this problem in his first nonfiction outing. His chops as both a novelist and a combat veteran are on full display here, laying out a cinematic and enthralling read. He makes clear the stakes and the odds in a way that rarely comes through in the textbook version of ancient history. He also has a veteran’s appreciation of technical detail, helping you to imagine the weight of the armor and the terror of mass melee combat. It’s like an entire book of Game of Thrones battles, if Game of Thrones actually followed sensible tactics. The end result is a wonderfully brisk romp for anyone with a background in Roman history and an exceptional entry point for someone wanting to learn about ancient warfare. It’s something I’m definitely going to recommend word-of-mourn to other veterans.

Myke Cole has made a name for himself in SFF, namely with the Reawakening Trilogy, the Shadow Ops trilogy, and his newer Sacred Throne trilogy. I knew I would buy this book, because I was a fan of his writing before, but this work surpassed my every expectation.Ostensibly it's an overview that seeks to answer the question WHY did the Legion eventually win out over the Phalanx? We knew this happened from history, but why wasn't an easily answered question, or at least one that was answered casually versus academically. Myke does a fantastic job of bringing a easy to read overview of the times and circumstances that saw the venerable phalanx give way to the machine that is the Roman Legion. He wades into the events and the characters of the age, with a storytellers aplomb and the serious eye of a scholar. Specifically he looks at six major battles where legion clashed with phalanx, and we get all of the politics, people, circumstance, weather, geography, and emotion of each engagement. You can see a half mile long line of pikes forming up to march across rough terrain. You can feel the tension and panic as sword met shield and the men of the line panic and falter. Many of our sources from that era only come from a few historians (Polybius, Livy, etc), and they weren't the most reliable chroniclers of history, seeking to tell a story as well. Myke Cole rigorously looks at the material and where gaps occur, readily acknowledges them and then uses the novelist in him to make the gap feel exciting and alive.I came out of this book not only salivating over the bibliography, but hoping that Myke writes another and another and another. It's highly enjoyable and readily recommended.

This is a good treatment of Greek and Roman military organization and tactical employment of the two approaches to infantry formation in the ancient world. Cole's writing is easy to follow, and he tells an enjoyable story in a subject which can be very dry. I appreciate the bibliography, although footnotes would have been appreciated. I realize that Cole is not an academic, but it is helpful to be able to check sources easily.Overall this is a very good first effort, and I hope there will be more Osprey books from Cole to set alongside his incredible fiction.

This book is a interesting analysis of the struggle between the legion and the phalanx. The author has quite a few thoughtful insights into the nature of classical warfare. The maps, if a bit creative, are quite good, and most of the illustrations are useful. My negative thoughts on this book center around several areas. The author’s writing style, often seemingly a ‘stream-of-consciousness’ discussion weakens his arguments and interferes with one wanting to take them seriously. The author’s reliance on the experience of reenactors cannot be taken seriously by most historians. As a group they mostly take the role of heavy infantry with virtually no horse and few light troops. Unlike American Civil War reenactors, classical participants lack the large number of ‘troops’ to simulate the actual maneuvers, real or hypothetical. The author’s battlefield experience, while commendable, is only limited in value, as it did not reflect troops fighting in large formations. The author is somewhat unclear over the role that peltasts and theuphoroi, medium troops, played on the field. They were developed as a counter to light troops but were also expected to be able to fight on the main battle line, particularly if they could take advantage of the rough terrain that would disorder troops that fought in a tighter formation. This would be reflected in their somewhat more open formation.Perhaps the most annoying thing in this book is the six references the author makes to the dreadful movie ‘300’; “Those familiar with the story of the Spartan stand at Thermopylae depicted in the movie 300 might remember..,” The author seems to ignore much of what we know of the role of Hellenistic monarchs, and even hoplite generals. They were all expected to fight in the front rank; this was not a matter of ego. I must admit that his description of Magnesia is outstanding as is his analysis of the long term histoprical role of the pike phalanx. It would have been useful if he started with an analysis of Chaeronea, wherethe pike phalanx, with great difficulty crushed the hoplites of Thebes and Athens. The fact is, that the pike phalanx never did well against good formed infantry, even warbands such as the Galatians. The pike grew in length mainly to give troops an advantage over other phalanx. It is interesting to note that the Swiss started using the pike after they already had the halberd, and never gave up the halberd which they would use for close-in fighting or in rough terrain.

I've been working with polymer clay for about 20 years and I have purchased over 100 books on polymer clay, some good, some bad. This is one f the better books that I have purchased. This instructions are very clear and are step-by-step, with photos. What I found really wonderful about this book was the fact that the author added recipes to go with the items she made in clay. Like she made cinnamon roll earrings and with that she added an actual cinnamon roll recipe. There are many other recipes that coincide with the polymer clay items in the book. All around a beautifully written book.

I LOVE this little book!If you only get one book on this subject THIS is the one to get.I have recently bought five different books on this same subject - none of them was as nice as this one. It is is so simple to understand. The well written instrucitons are clear and easy to follow - even if you have absolutely no background in this medium (I am a total novice, and I understood!). There are beautifully done photos .Some of the other books offer final products which are disappointing - they end up plooking like they were made by grade school students.Every single one of these projects is really really cool - something with a high resale potential.I highly recommend this book.

I love it. Admittedly it's more of a beginner's book on how to sculpt, it's still enjoyable enough that it's fine. And a refresher is never a bad thing. It carries techniques I hadn't thought of as well as giving the reader something quick and fun to try with out feeling pressured about their abilities. Even if the best you could manage was a lopsided ashtray for your granddad as a kid, this book gives you a great leg up to doing cute and fun projects that will help you learn to do better and making things you won't feel the least bit embarrassed about admitting you made them.

This is the perfect book for anyone getting into polymer clay. Not only do you get some great "recipes" for making some cute food items, but you get a great introduction to the tools used to make them.I was into bead making, with polymer clay, years ago. Coming back to the hobby I decided to peruse Youtube and found that I was out of the loop. What is this chalk stuff they are using to color with and what are those tools called? This book has you covered!

This is a great book to read. I gave it 5 star because I love it has almost each explanation illustrated with great pictures. The pictures look so amazing that even if you get kind of discourage when reading the book thinking is too hard to do, the pictures will get you there. The pictures inspires you too continue so you can see the great results and great ideas comes to your mind while making your projects. It has a lot of information about the materials to use and why using those. The artist also explaing in detail how and what she uses to give different kind of textures to the clay. Great for everyone. I love to work with my daughter who is 9 years old.

I bought several polymer clay books online and I have to say that this is my favorite. I am a beginner and what i like most about this book is that everything is written in a step-by-step format with pictures, and that they start out each project with a reasonable amount of clay so you're not wasting a fortune. Other books that I bought online for polymer clay miniatures, start out with giant amounts of clay which is ridiculously expensive to make. This book is fun, well written, and teaches you how to wear your creations....what's cuter than ice cream cone earrings???

Easy to follow instructions, lovely photos and a great beginners introduction to polymer clay in the front of the book. The style of work reminds me of some of the cute Japanese miniature food toys and doll sets that are so hard to get in the US. With this book you can start making you own, be if for doll dioramas or jewelry (as shown in the book). It is a great book to show people who have a fear of polymer clay, the ideas are so cute they will want to try making a few. :)

I love this book! I have made SEVERAL items out of this book. I have been working with polymer clay for over 10 years now and this book certainly got me to learn new techniques. I made the cinnamon rolls, pretzels, tacos and sugar cookies.I love how the book takes you step by step and is very clear in their directions. I also love the give you a recipe for a sugar scrub for your hands, which have yet to try. But I do love Bath and Body works hand soap to remove polymer clay from my hands.

Manet: The Still Life Paintings

Amazon.com Review

The French artist Édouard Manet was delighted when a client who purchased his painting of a bunch of asparagus paid more than the asking price. So he sent a special thank-you--a tiny image of a single pale spear of the prized vegetable. These and other lushly painted still lifes of flowers, fruits, and other foodstuffs, isolated or in groups, form one of the most beguiling aspects of Manet's output from the 1860s through the early '80s. Manet: The Still-Life Paintings, the catalog for the exhibition at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, through April 22, 2001, serves as a pleasant introduction to the intimate late work of the great 19th-century realist. With 106 color reproductions, including close-up details of brushwork, the modestly scaled volume makes for a satisfying browse. The most deliciously unexpected treats are the luminous watercolors of fruit, nuts, or flowers that Manet interwove with his personal correspondence. Earlier in Manet's career, still-life images played a supporting role in figure paintings. Author George Mauner, professor emeritus of art history at Pennsylvania State University, guides the reader to observe such details as the cherry falling in midair in Young Man w ith Cherries. This fascination with instantaneous effects would culminate 11 years later in the smoking rifles of the Mexican troops in The Execution of Emperor Maximilian. Manet, of course, was well aware of the tradition of still life as an invocation of the senses and as a reminder of the fleeting nature of sensual pleasure (and life itself). Mauner explains how this art-historical knowledge offers clues to some of the artist's more enigmatic paintings. The quote-heavy, name-dropping style of fellow essayist Henri Loyrette seems less attuned to a general reader's interests. But the book's most grievous sin is one of omission: the failure to include even the briefest biographical outline of Manet's life and work. --Cathy Curtis

Close reading isn't just for poetry. In Manet: The Still-Life Paintings, George Mauner, distinguished professor emeritus of art history at Penn State, gives close and illuminating attention to some of the best-loved works in all of modern painting, reproduced here in 133 illustrations (106 in full color). Henri Loyrette, director of Paris's Mus?e d'Orsay, contributes an essay showing Manet's place within a long tradition of still-life painters. Subject-based sections such as "The First Flowers," "Fruits and Vegetables" and "Two Festive Tables" make a large body of work accessible and thematically coherent. This book is certainly among the best overviews of Manet's still-life paintings. If you enjoy direct, descriptive paintings with rich color, this book is likely to interest you. I especially liked seeing the "unfinished" basket of pears on page 107 (the kind of work usually left out of such books), which gave me a good idea of how Manet approached his still-lifes of this period. By the way, overall, the reproductions are very good (of course, paintings are never as good in print as in real life).AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MY ART BOOK REVIEWS: It might seem as though I rate most art books very favorably. The reason for this is that I usually visit my local library before buying a book. I'll look at all (in print and out of print) of the Rembrandt (for example) books and choose my favorite one to purchase. In the case of an artist's monograph, I try to choose one or two comprehensive books for each artist. These are generally large, well illustrated hardcovers with above average reproduction quality and informative text, often by one of the leading scholars on the artist. Thus, by the time I purchase a book, I have already found it to be among the best available on the subject. This is the best book of Manet's still-lifes that I could find. My copy is a hardcover.

I do studies form this book and was taking it our of the library so often my fines were piling up. Finally bought it! One of the best available of Manet's work. Hope one day there is an update with even better reproductions.

Excellent product, very happy with this vendor. I would use again. Thank you.

I checked this book out from the library (and returned it multiple times) for at least half a year. It's an insightful look into a sometimes overlooked aspect of Manet's oeuvre and profound work. I'm a painter; I love owning this book.

Great book. Love it.

The essay by Henri Loyette in this book on the meaning of still-life paintings, sets the stage for an exquisite presentation of this collection of Manet plates. By giving us a deep exploration of the history and philosophy of still-life paintings, Loyette situates Manet's still-life paintings in the context of the overall still-life movement -- from Chardin and the Dutch Masters to the role it played in enabling the development of more abstract art.For one who admired but still kept my distance from still-life paintings, and only understood them from a distance and only "on the surface," Loyette's explanations make good sense and are invaluable to filling in the blanks in my artistic knowledge. I now feel I have a sounder intellectual basis for understanding still-life paintings generally, and for understanding Manet in particular. But this is not all, in general the explanations of Manet's paintings open up a new avenue for understanding the era of art in which he appeared. His was an important transition period to the new trends in abstract art.The plates are high quality classics that everyone who appreciates art have in their collection. Four stars.

I journeyed to the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore to see the exhibition. "MANET - The Still Life Paintings" which is on view until April 22, 2001. The show was previously at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. It is a lovely, intimate show. The majority of these gorgeous still lifes of fruits, vegetables and flowers were painted in the last three years of Manet's life. Unfortunately, the catalogue does not begin to do these beautful oil paintings and watercolors justice. The book's colorplates are of unsatisfactory quality and fail to capture the sumptuousness of these touching works of art. The book measures just shy of 9 inches by 9 inches, too small to get any partial enjoyment after seeing the exhibition. The text does not advance art scholarship. Not worth the price.

The beautifully reproduced paintings. with some detail shots, in this potent package remind us that Manet truly is the 'father of modernism.' The still lifes of fruit alone would make this book a must have for any art book lover. His peaches, lemons, strawberries and plums are so full of longing, sadness, bliss and sheer beauty that they stop you in your tracks. I don't know how else to say it: Manet was an artist of cosmic proportions. The transcenant nature of the work juxtaposed against the audacious technique rightfully set Manet at the forefront of the western cannon.

What if you picked up the phone and you heard the voice of a loved one who had passed away? When a few people in Coldwater, Michigan started getting phone calls from their dead family members, there were plenty of skeptics, but the ones who got the calls had no doubt that they were hearing their loved ones' voices, and when word got out, the whole world wanted to hear more.Mitch Albom is best know for his powerful non-fiction, especially Tuesdays with Morrie. In The First Phone Call from Heaven, he has some fun imagining the impact a phone call from heaven might have. As word spread, pilgrims overran Coldwater, hoping for their own line to heaven. While few got their call, and some complained about the traffic and inconvenience, "there was also talk about heaven. And faith. And God. There were more prayers said than in years past. More requests for forgiveness. The volunteers for soup kitchens far exceeded the need."Albom plays the calls along, hinting through the doubts of the main character that they may not be genuine, but leaving the reader little reason to think that they aren't for real. He balances the mystery with the reality of lives changed. The hardened reporter for the local paper reflects on whether the calls are good for Coldwater: "Let's see. People are behaving better, eh? We haven't even had a shoplifting incident since all this started. . . . [E]very seat in church is full. People praying like never before. So what do you think. . . ? Is it good?" Yet his cynicism causes him to doubt. With his rich characterizations of both the individual players and of small-town life, Albom tells the kind of story he's known for, full of wisdom, a strong dose of sentimentality, and a warm feeling of satisfaction with the end. The theology of the book leans a bit toward universalism, although he's not explicit about that. Ironically, theology isn't really the point of the book. It's more like how our lives and choices affect others, what we hope for, and how faith can inform the choices we make. The message isn't particularly powerful, the lessons aren't particularly deep, and the writing isn't particularly compelling or artful. But Albom tells a nice story, sure to be enjoyed by many. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

I bought this with the intent of reading it later.. but, just wanted to read a bit of it so I could figure out when to read it. Before I knew it.. I'd read the whole book. lmao. It was a very fast read. Easily finished it before I went to bed. I started it around two PM. I had to keep reading it as I was positive I'd figured out the ending. Good grief.. I could not have been more wrong! The ending TOTALLY shocked me. I won't write a spoiler.. but, I love how the author finished the book. Your heart just goes out to the main character and his son. The characters were extremely well crafted and they become totally "fleshed" out over the course of the book. One can easily see how the claim that so many folks from the same area had all received phone calls from "heaven" from their loved ones.. would put every person out there on the path to a little town in the middle of no where.. in hopes that they too.. could speak with their loved ones who have crossed over. This book is not religious. I think that was the biggest surprise. It's about what may lay on the "other" side.. but, takes no mankind fixed religion over any other. It's inspirational without being preachy. Totally enjoyed it. In some ways.. It brought it's own comfort. And, any book that can do that.. is one that deserves an audience!

Just last week, my family was talking about the people who have had the greatest influence on our lives. My answer was a wonderful priest who, (due to, or in spite of!) over 50 years in the priesthood, still believes in miracles! Because he believed, he helped me to do so as well, and as they say "it has made all the difference". Miracles, I believe, are most often a personal and private gift from God and the greatest gift in it all is the desire to believe. “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”St. Augustine of Hippo

Natasha Smirnova’s life is changed irrevocably the day Hitler’s forces march into Kiev. As the city is occupied and the German troops begin their stranglehold, the Smirnova family is repeatedly torn apart; by death, by imprisonment, even by a budding romance.Savaged Lands follows Natasha’s life as she struggles to hold her family together throughout the German occupation. She watches as the German troops march in, as they begin enforcing their new rules and the city begins to change around her. Those close to her are gradually whittled away, either due to dissent, German policy or simply by the choices they make in order to survive. The sense of potential doom hangs over her every day.But there are lighter moments, as well. Her chance encounter with a Hungarian soldier conscripted into the German occupation swiftly blossoms into a love affair that shapes the rest of her life. The moments they manage to steal away and be together are among the lightest and most hopeful in the book.Obviously, anything related to the Second World War is not going to be an easy read and there are moments where the full horror of what happened is hinted at. But, for the most part, things are kept at a personal level. That is traumatic enough.Since the focus is on the Smirnova family, the emotions of the family members feature very strongly. Some withdraw and become embittered while others cling to the hope that they will be saved. As the war drags on, they find themselves changing to cope with their new reality. These emotional developments never feel forced and add an extra layer of reality to what is already a very strong story-line.All in all, Savaged Lands is a very good novel exploring the joys of a new relationship, the horrors of surviving a Nazi occupation, the will to survive and keep believing in hope.

Savaged Lands contains a lot of different elements. There’s budding romance, wartime fear, and characters who long to simply return to peaceful times and their homes. Throughout all this is a clear overview of what war does to people’s lives. Not the detached sort of war seen on a television screen video game, but the kind that tears at every aspect of a community. In demonstrating a real war’s travesty, ‘Savaged Lands’ is right on the mark. It’s the events happening—not the characters—that drew me. To be very clear; this story is not happy-go-lucky or slice of life. Readers shouldn’t touch it if they don’t like feeling ‘things’. Imagine Schindler's List—but with a different scope and region. For those unfamiliar with the movie—we have a city occupied by the invading Nazi army. We have citizens from all regions represented as they deal with a controlling government doctrine, racial oppression and outright mass murder, extortion, conscription and so on. It’s a heavy air where inhumane atrocities happen one after the other. Through it all, we’re following a girl of nineteen as she tries to cope with constant change.I’ll quote one line from around twenty-five percent that made me try to hold back tears since I’m a big softy and this was blipping heart-rending.Nikita buried his head in his hands and sobbed. Mother whispered to Natasha, ‘The things he told me on the way here… He felt his Papa shudder for the last time when the bullets hit him. He heard his last breath.’That being said, I had a few minor quibbles. Scenes and conversations can flow quickly if you’re not carefully reading word for word. The tone is set with a few well-phrased details but they were rapid and didn’t give me time to absorb the severity at times—it got lost in the almost ‘normal’ conversation. Finally, there were many places where I paused and detached myself from the novel to try and figure out ‘why’ the invading army did what it did. Many out there may wonder if this tale has any sort of bright spot. In short—yes. There were a lot of small wonders throughout the story. I enjoyed the budding romance aspect, how they snuck around, and the occasional levity. The family interaction was comforting as they struggled to stay together. The third person made the tragedy observable just far enough away to survive. In the end, everything ends on a positive note. For the genre, story tone and affecting me enough to sit down and hang my head as the events made me sad; Savaged Lands get a solid four star leaning toward a five. These types of stories are something I believe everyone should read once in a while—if only to remind ourselves of war’s cost.

This is a captivating book about the Smirnova family who live in German-occupied Kiev during WWII when bombings, hunger, cruelty and brutally cold winters are the norm. The author tells the story in a way that isn't gloomy or depressing, given the war, but is hopeful and enchanting. What a beautiful love story between Natasha and Mark, a couple I rooted for with fingers crossed throughout this novel. I fell in love with them both.Ms. Kortchik paints a vivid picture of the streets of Kiev, the buildings, the autumn, the snow, and how war changes everyone's life. Maybe it's just me, but I was reminded of Dr. Zhivago, a book I adore, although it's in a different time. When I wasn't reading it, I found myself missing the family and eagerly wanting to find out what happened next to each of the characters.Lovely, well written novel of loss, hope, and love. Highly recommend!

I've read numerous Nazi-themed novels set in WWII. I don't know why I keep doing that to myself, as the Nazis were thoroughly reprehensible; morbid fascination, I suppose, plus I think that what they did should never be forgotten lest it happen again. I'd never read one that focused on the occupation of Kiev, so I picked this one up. The history was interesting, as were the characters, and I thought the book was well-written. I'll read more from this author.

This story was very reminiscent of Paulina Simon's trilogy, starting with the "Bronze Horseman." To be honest, I enjoyed Ms. Simon's books a lot more. Even down to the scrabbling sisters and mismatched love interests. The biggest difference in the two books is that "The Story of Us" takes place in Kiev, while "The Bronze Horseman" takes place in the former Leningrad. Both are tragic stories of the horrors visited by the Nazis on the Russian people. They suffered unbelievably, but still they persevered. I wouldn't not tell anyone to not read "The Story of Us," but, I would recommend Ms. Simon's trilogy instead.
