I haven't started yet...but I have flipped through the book and it looks like a good reference guide...since I plan to look up specific questions I am bound to have on the Internet.My specific interest is in improving portraits, especially group pictures of friends/family...I don't think the book addresses questions about improving eyelashes, etc...but I know there are lots of helpful articles on the Internet.
Photoshop Elements 15 is a powerful and complex program and I was looking for a book that would teach me how to use it. Unfortunately, this was not the ideal book for that. Although many sections of this book contain thorough explanations of PE 15’s tools and functions, other sections were confusing and insufficiently explained. The lack of clarity in some of the explanations was very frustrating. For example, the section on fixing distortion with the perspective crop tool stated, “Adjust the edges and corners of your marquee as needed†without explaining the best way to do so to correct keystone distortion. The section on layers was very brief, unclear and difficult to follow. It also preceded sections on necessary photo editing operations such as the cropping and straightening tools, levels and color correction. The printing on some of the included photographs was too faint to see the grid lines that went along with the explanations. When discussing working with layers, there were explanations of what the author was doing, but without seeing the original photo or being able to duplicate the effects, attempting to follow the instructions was extremely frustrating. This book would benefit from the inclusion of a CD with sample photos (or a link to a website) so that the reader would have the opportunity to recreate the images that were contained in the book. The section on Styles described them in connection with layers, and it seemed to skip a few steps in the explanation. As a result, it took me a while to figure out why I was unable to do what the author of the book could do. The Section on Working with Type was similarly missing intermediate steps. In describing how to use the Text On Selection Tool, there were no illustrations and the instructions were insufficient to allow me to use it on my image. In contrast, the explanation on Adobe’s website was much clearer and contained illustrations. Some of the sections omitted screen shots of what particular tools or menus looked like, making it difficult to determine which tool or menu instruction to click on. Between that and the insufficient explanations, it was frustrating having to guess what the authors wanted me to do. A full explanation with sufficient illustrations would have made for a longer book, but it would have eliminated the frustration. This book had some excellent sections on explaining some of the simpler tools, but for the more complex tools, I had to watch Youtube videos or read the explanations on Adobe’s website to understand how to use them. The book is useful as a reference manual to accompany the program, but I feel that it does not fully succeed as a basic teaching tool.
Between this easy to understand book and online tutorials, learning this software is less daunting. It's fun to play with the features and it helps to find what I need but checking the index. This book is invaluable to me. I'd recommend it to others who need easy to follow instructions on how to become comfortable navigating Elements 15.
Didn't find it helpful as there are few pictures to show you how to do something. For instance it will tell you to open the X tool to perform this function, how am I supposed to know where to find that tool?
I've decided that for most software I buy, the Dummies books are not anywhere near the best way to learn how to use them. Photoshop Elements 15 is a huge and complex photo editing program with a steep learning curve. I Elements some years ago, before changing to Picasa, a free product offered by Google, which I used happily for years. A year or so Google stopped supporting this fine photo-management program, much to my sorrow. I bought Elements 15 as well as this Dummies book to help me learn to use the program effectively. Sadly, even as a digital download, it was not flexible enough for me to learn well from it.However, don't despair. YouTube comes to the rescue. I began working with Photoshop Elements 15 with a boost from this book and the two-sided cheat sheet I also bought. i soon discovered myself against a problem I didn't know how to solve. That's when Google and YouTube came to my aid. First with simple explanations on Google and then with many videos posted by a variety of experts on YouTube. By watching the YouTube videos, sometimes slowly and repeatedly, at other times quickly and easily, I was able to learn new routines as I needed them, practice them to mastery, and refresh my memory when needed. For me, at least the way I learn best, this was (and remains) an ideal solution.I'm a busy blogger and Internet writer, so I usually don't have time, or inclination, to watch a lot of these instructional videos at a time, but that's not necessary. I intend, soon, to start relearning and extending my skills with video processing, an associated program I bought with the package, for my YouTube collection of songs. And my ability to do the work I want on PhotoShop Elements is being extended as I discover needs, rather than seeking to learn it all.
It's helpful. I've never used this program before, so I am starting at scratch. Haven't had a lot of time yet to really get into cleaning up my photos, but what little I've tried so far has worked like the book said it would.
I don't have a lot of experience with Photohshop so this ebook has been quite helpful. I preferred the Kindle version as I have two monitors and seems easier for me to use the larger monitor for editing while following along on the laptop screen instead of taking up extra room on my desk. The pages that I use the most can be book marked which is helpful.
