Seeing is believing! To understand the development of ships over the centuries you should compare models, and the author should assist you by pointing out the differences not so obvious to a beginner's eye. This Mr. Gardiner does, and he does it well. He clearly knows his models, and he explains where there are some uncertainties, such as the presence or absence of sweep ports on the model versus the ship itself. The book is beautifully, richly, amply illustrated, and it is very reasonably priced. Excellent!

This book is more to my liking. The photos are clear, sharp, and outstanding models that provide a glimpse of what is required of a frigate, particularly in terms of the highly detailed accoutrements on the models illustrated. Many of the photos focus on the hull construction and only a few photos focusing on fully built up ships with masts, rigging, and spars all detailed. Perusing the photos in the book reveal how model ships should be built; attention to realism and details of sailing ships in the 17th and 18th centuries. Worth every dollar spent. One of the best books I've purchased in recent years. If you don't own this book, you're really missing out on view glorious photographs of sailing ships.

Robert Gardiner has written several excellent books on the sailing frigates of the Royal Navy. This one is in effect, an annotated catalogue of the frigate models in the National Maritime museum. It explains through the beautiful photographs, the evolution of this ship type. It is an important contribution to the literature on this topic, mainly because it illustrates many models that have not been examined closely and which the NMM has not chosen to place on public display. I see it as a useful ship modeling resource, a source of ideas on potential new models, and a well illustrated text. I highly recommend it and look forward to other books in this series. The author has indicated that he plans to produce several more books of this type, each focusing on a different type of sailing warship. I recommend it strongly.

I'm a professional model maker, aerospace (unfortunately), but whose true love the past 45 years has always been man-o-war models. Curiously enough, the more spacecraft I build the more fascinated I become with the technology of the wooden walls. Perhaps this is a counter-balancing mechanism. At any rate this interest in wooden warships has filled my library with many wonderful books by the most credible naval design authorities. Frequently the books in my collection featured images of the beautiful Admiralty style models. Sadly, the majority of the pictures were black and white. None the less, being such as I am, those photos further wetted my appetite for yet more data which could be of use in building an Admiralty model. Thanks to Amazon's habit of recommending products I was informed of the existence of this book. Based on other's recommendations this book purchased. Much to my surprise it is filled from cover to cover with COLOR photographs of Admiralty models. Surprisingly, considering the scope of my library, this book also contained data of which I was unaware. My congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the author for creating this delightful collection of imagery. Should one be have an interest in Admiralty models or the desire to build one I highly recommend this book. I feel it was money well spent. A word of caution: My copy was delivered at my workplace. I began thumbing through it during a meeting with some Nasa folks present. The unexpectedly gorgeous pictures elicited many uncontrollable sounds of model maker ecstasy from myself. The females present did not appreciate the vocalizations. Nor were they capable of grasping how one could be so enchanted with photos of two-hundred year old wooden models. So, the lesson is, do not review this book in mixed company. Once again, hats off to the author for sharing his collection of color images with us.

About the Author

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) is best known for the classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest. After reading many other reviews for this book and it's other versions and comparing the two text samples I decided I really wanted the original version, not the updated one with "today's language" or whatever. I noticed while reading through all the other reviews that it seemed the reviews were getting all mixed together. So if you want the original version just make sure you order the maroon hardcover book that has (Deluxe Christian Classics) in the title.

You know how you search and search for a devotional that really speaks to you and the struggles of your life that you think only you go through? I bought so many devotionals that were gonna be "the one" that just ended up sitting on my desk. Then my pastor friend who had given me awesome book suggestions in the past just said to try his out for a month. I never took a test drive like that before. I think it was in the fall, maybe in October, and the series of daily devotionals and bible verse readings really built one on top of the other. It was real easy to read, and also easy for me to apply to that day I was facing. I first ordered the wrong version and as I spoke to my neighbor he shared with me that he really only likes the KJV. I'm not a fan. Interpreting the intent of the Bible is hard enough. Also interpreting the old English way of writing is needlessly complicated in my opinion. Anyhoo...I gave that version to my neighbor. I ordered the newer version that I now use every day. It's fantastic, remarkable, and connects me further to God's Word. I've recommended this to many many others and I doubt that any of them were disappointed.

Oswald Chambers packs a powerful punch for generations of Christians. My Utmost for His Highest is not for the casual believer. Each daily devotional requires deep contemplation and not cursory reading. Persevere and reap the spiritual rewards. You will certainly find the verse applications uplifting, but they are equally convicting. The discussion offered with each verse draws you closer to recommitment and confession. I have not found another daily devotional offering such overwhelming impact... one that directly instills the desire for us to give our very best, to achieve God's perfect purpose. The beautiful leather-bound edition with writing space for personal notes is ideal.

I had the original version years ago. Even though it was inspiring, the language was a little challenging. This new version is completely uplifting, as well as, thought provoking to me. I have my Bible ready to explore the passages that Chambers references for a deeper understanding of both the scriptures, and his writing. Please read the foreword, introduction, and section entitled "A Word about Oswald and Biddy Chambers". It is equally as inspiring and humbling. Even though I had the previous edition, I did not know that biographical information about the Oswalds. It reminded me of a musical project I had from the 90's titled "My Utmost for His Highest." I got it out and listened to it. That really brought back memories, and all that God had brought me through!

To fully appreciate this book which is a daily devotional, one should also read "Abandoned to God" which is the life of Oswald Chambers. .In Oswald Chambers "Abandoned to God," you trace the life of this servant of God from his boyhood home in Scotland through an astounding journey of faith. Some have said that next to the Bible, "My Utmost for His Highest" is the most read book in the world. The book was first published in 1935. The copyright was renewed in 1963 by the Oswald Chambers Publications Association, Ltd. The "Updated Edition in Today's Language," edited by James Reimann, has appeared in a variety of formats since 1992. My Utmost for His Highest has been officially translated into over 39 languages and has never been out of print. This information came from Wikipedia.

I picked this up as a graduation gift for one of the seniors in our church this year. It's a nice little paperback edition of My Utmost for His Highest with an inscription page at the front to help you give the book as a gift.Oswald Chambers' devotional book "My Utmost For His Highest" is a classic devotional - it has a lot of profound thoughts on faith and the we live as people called by God. Even though this version isn't the "new edition" that has been reworked into more accessible language, I'd say that the devotions within are still accessible and easy enough to read. Chambers is good at both giving encouragement from scripture for the times when you struggle and in giving admonishment and challenges for the times when you need to grow, and he alternates between the two quite regularly in this devotional. These are the kinds of encouragement and challenge we all need - even more so when we're in college, often experiencing new forms of freedom and independence that are unfamiliar to us otherwise.These books are reasonably priced, which makes it nice for a church working on a budget - if you have several graduating from your congregation, you're not spending a huge amount of money to give them something that, if they use it regularly, will go with them through much of the rest of their lives.

A giant among personal devotionals, My Utmost For His Highest pulls no punches. Though Oswald Chambers' ministry was cut short, God used him to pen a devotional that cuts straight to the core of man's nature. I highly recommend this devotional to anyone no afraid to face the truth of God's Word.
