I think I'd like to go to Tony Evans's church. To be honest, most men's ministry-type books turn me off, but in Kingdom Man, Evans's solid biblical exposition and challenging teaching make me want to sit at his feet so he can disciple me. Evans, founder and pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, doesn't waste time with pop psychology or feel-good stories. Nor is he concerned with equality or feminism. He's a good, old-fashioned, preacher of the Bible who believes men should be the heads of their families, and step up to take leadership in their homes, churches, and communities. In the heart of Kingdom Man, part 3, Evans looks at Psalm 128 as the blueprint for a kingdom man. In his personal life, he "walks in [God's] ways. In his family life, his wife is "like a fruitful vine within his house," his children "like olive plants around your table." In church life, "the Lord bless you from Zion." In the community, he will "see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life."Evans isn't shy about offering examples from his own life and ministry. The cynic in me got a little tired of his tooting his own horn. But my inner cynic was shut up by Evans's humility, as he attributes God's blessings in his life to God's power as well as to the foundation laid by his father, also a pastor and a kingdom man. Evans's success in life and ministry is challenging and inspiring, but also a bit intimidating. If there's a weakness to Kingdom Man, it's that: the intimidation factor. Like many inspirational or self-help books, the author's success is difficult to translate into the readers' lives. Here's a highly successful man, urging the reader to follow his example and find success in his own life. I don't dispute the principles Evans lays down here, nor do I doubt that to the extent I apply those principles my life and my relationship with God will improve. But I was left feeling like Evans is on a higher, unobtainable plane. Perhaps if Evans would come over to Fort Worth to disciple me for a couple of years, I could get there, too. Thanks to Tyndale House Publishers for the complimentary review copy!

i bought this book as i am going through a family crisis in my life. i've made mistakes, i was not the best husband, father, son, brother, Christian man i could be. I ordered this book in July when my wife of 5yrs love of 8 years walked out the door with our 3 beautiful children. i didnt know what to do. i didnt know how to get her back. Most importantly i didnt know where to start in correcting my mistakes. I do not have the awesome success story that movies are made of. But this book is a sincere wake up call to all Men of Faith out there. This book is a gift from GOD to set me up on solid ground as i walk in faith in with him. I am working on rebuilding my life one day at a time and I now have the strong burning desire to be nothing more than a True Kingdom Man of GOD. I dont know where my future lies with my family but i trust that GOD is always on time. At the young age of 31 i've seen my share of pain. This book will help to ensure that with GOD on my side i will not see more pain in the future. Whatever you are going through or if you are simply to improve yourself as a man. This book is a must read!

I got this book for my adult son. He said, this book is teaching me things about manhood that I never knew. I can see my pass mistakes and how I need to change my ways, my thinking. This new information will help me make better choices. And making better choices will help me live a better life.

Any man who truly wants to be a better husband, father, brother, friend, boss, and or employee needs to read this book. Tony has a done a great job of taking all the subjects matters we should have learned from our fathers and put them into an easy to understand book with practical application.

Awesome book. Helps every man realize his God created calling to lead, love, and be great. It is written directly to men in a way that is easy to understand and recall. Great stories and word pictures. Helps turn a man into a Kingdom Man. Great author.

Very thought-provoking, empowering, insightful, and inspiring. We’ve used this book in our weekly men’s Bible study at Oakwood United Methodist Church in Lubbock Texas. Due to this book, we are renewing our focus on Kingdom-minded men’s leadership and youth focus. I would highly recommend this book to anyone (especially young men) that wants to improve their personal and community life.

Evans does an amazing job showing men what God expects. If you truly want to be the man God calls you to be, this book will teach and encourage you. Of course what this book says matters little if you don't apply what you learn from it and scripture. After only one and a half days of applying this knowledge, I could see a difference in the way my wife responded to me. Men, Evans is undeniably a tool of the Lord. Read and see for yourself!

I really didn’t want to title this as a pipe dream, but that’s exactly what it is. My reasons for saying that are as follows; most people in our society won’t give up their schedules, tv shows, questionable movies, climbing the corporate ladder, or anything else to become what this well written bible based book is about. Go to any restaurant & observe 80% of customers are on there phones, parents & children alike. Loved the book, & will attempt to try living out some of its principles.

This book came at a time in my life when I was really struggling with what it meant to be a man. While I'm sure there are many books that cover the topic of biblical manhood, I truly believe the Lord led me to Tony Evans' Kingdom Man. This book legitimately changed my perspective on my relationship with God, my family, my church, and my community. Would recommend to any young man looking for answers.

Ronald Takaki is an Emeritus Professor at the University of California. He is a major writer in the field of Ethnic Studies . A Different Mirror is 445 pages of rather small text, so doing more than hinting at its contents is impossible. Before reading A Different Mirror I saw our nation’s history as the story of the advance of civilization. “Civilization” being the version of civilization that was developed in England and passed on through our Declaration of Independence and Constitution and the culture of freedom surrounding it. Now I have an awareness of the equal contribution of other streams some already here, and some also from across the seas. And I am deeply aware of the suffering of these peoples in this process.Takaki starts with the Irish. The English began thumping on them first when as England and Ireland they were neighbors. With ample help from the English the Irish were impoverished. To escape starvation they boarded the boats, came over here, to do the work of the bestial, stupid, filthy underclass. From that point they built themselves into powerful, knowledgeable and wealthy members of the white system. From my childhood to my adulthood the Irish in my family did not stop being a competitive minority under-class until Jack Kennedy became president. On that day we arrived as members of the white power structure. While the Irish are described well in Takaki’s history, their fellow whites less so., For instance the Swedes are served not at all, nor the Germans, nor the French, , and just a dab at the Italians This is not a complaint. Even a big book has limits. After the Irish story comes the tragic tale of the stealing of Indian land. The removal of whole native peoples en mass from the lands they had possessed for generations. This attempt at genocide was based on two very disputable “facts.” First the Indians were ignorant savages, and second, they did not need the land since they were not farming it. Until the 1970s we made the practice of Native American religion a crime, destroying their culture .Takaki covers the story of the Blacks from slavery to Martin Luther King and close to today. No surprises there if you are following the copious coverage of that history in the media, but he squeezes a lot of African American history into these pages. I realized my own narrowness in thinking of racial history as being a Black and White story. Not at all. It is much broader and much worse than that. The battle of the Alamo looks much less heroic when I realize that it occurred well within the boundaries of Mexico. (A 2017 joke: The Mexicans will pay for a wall on the border if we give them back California.) The Mexicans did not have to migrate to the United States. We moved the lines, and then they were in the United States, but without property rights, in a foreign culture, vulnerable and victimized. The Chinese arrived to build the railroads from West to East, as the Irish were building them from East to West. Tough work. Single men came first and families later. The Chinese were being pressured by the spreading British Empire on their East to cross the seas and join and collide with the same culture in our WestThe Japanese are followed from their arrival in fruitless pursuit of gold (hills of it they had heard) through World War Two where while young male Japanese Americans were grudgingly allowed to fight on the European front, their families were interned in what can only be called prison camps to prevent any possible seditious activity. (None of which ever appeared.)In Different Mirrors I first discovered that President Roosevelt turned back to certain death in Germany a ship full of Jews trying to escape Hitler. Worse, he did it because the polls showed that ninety percent of United States citizens wanted him to do precisely that. What I gained from this book is a deep and specific sense of the terrible cost those other than the founders have paid for a seat at the American table.Does your picture of how we all got here need tuning as badly as mine? Ronald Takaki is a compelling storyteller. Because of that this is about as easy a lesson as anyone can make it.

I just finished reading this history of multicultural America, and I just wanted to add my appreciation to Takaki for writing the history of our nation from the point of view of the people who built it and made it as it is.Finally, a history of the U.S. that speaks the awful truth about the discrimination and horrors so many ethnic groups went through to make America the greatest country on Earth, as it is unfortunately still the case today.A reading I'd strongly recommend in these times of confusion and hatred, where too many folks tend to forget the challenges and sufferings of Native Americans, African Americans, Irish Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Jewish Americans, Mexican Americans, and so many other groups who came before us.E pluribus unum ... right?

Required reading for Multicultural Perspectives (along with Kaleidoscope), but this is one of those books I just HAD to keep. I wish that this information was taught in high school, though. It gives the REAL history of America, rather than the watered down, PC version that makes everything look rosy. I'm making my kids read it over the summer.

This book is an excellent source of information for people who want to round out their understanding of USA history with untold stories from the perspective of those who are seldom heard. Is it biased as other reviewers claim? Yes absolutely, but so is every other book written on American history since we and all these writers are humans and therefore inherently biased. This work essentially gives a third side to what is often presented as an equally biased two dimensional story with the Christian Anglo-European settlers as the completely untarnished heroes taking on savage natives and the paternalistic burden of caring for those so-called less civilized child-like people who are made to serve them. This book does not, in my opinion, take away from the bravery of these settlers and those among them who pushed west. It does provide, however, another important angle of insight into the human beings behind the caricatures. The only thing that I can think of that would have made this book even better is a more rounded presentation of all people characterized as the victims (They too certainly have more than one side). Overall, I believe the greatest value this book offers is a better understanding of the origins of certain unconscious biases held by all of us about race, religion, ethnicity and a host of other topics that still persist in our culture today.

The book is written simply and to make an impact. Society, culture, ethnicity, and prejudice are all complicated subjects and Takaki weaves them together to explain our differences and provide some common ground. The book is mostly chronological, with particular topics (events or groups of people) separated into their own chapters or sections, so every once in awhile there is a bit of a time shift. I think for most readers Takaki reaches his goal of spreading a little of understanding, patience, and acceptance. America is a tough place, no matter your background, but it is far tougher for some.

Great text for anyone interested in learning about the other multi-cultural / multi-ethnic roots of American society. While some of us may have knowledge about Ellis Island from our ancestors, the stories of non-European immigrants has largely been left out of the picture. Takaki shows connections between historical events and the ethnic groups that were involved but not mentioned in standard accounts. If you enjoy reading Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States" you should also enjoy "A Different Mirror." Takai, being of Japanese descent tells the history from another perspective which has been ignored.

The premise of this book is really interesting. Do you know the chronological order for the books of the Bible? When were the Prophets writing their books? When did David live? Wouldn’t it be neat to read the Books in the order that they were written? Rhodes helps us do just that in this book.It gets you through the whole Bible in a year and so you read several chapters or a book each day. Each daily devotional starts with a reminder of what was read the day before, and then it moves on to a very brief summary of the high points of the day’s reading. At the most that section is only a few sentences long. To finish Rhodes picks one verse from the days reading to meditate on following up with a personal application question. It’s more like an introduction to the Bible than an actual study of the Bible so there is no deep discussion or careful study of anything.Rhodes has divided the Bible into 9 sections or historical eras. I found the introduction to each of those sections to be the most interesting part of the book. It’s a quick overview of the dates of that era and the major events. It was very informative to see the dates arranged next to the major events of that year. One thing I didn’t like was the way he chose to dodge the dating of the first few chapters of Genesis. He does teach that they are the literal history of the creation of the world and humanity. It’s just that he said that it happened in the “undated past”. I understand that there wasn’t much time to discuss any particular concept in detail, but he seemed unnecessarily vague. The Postscript was also a part I wasn’t really excited about. I’m not sure that one sentence can accurately summarize an entire book of the Bible. But again it is an introduction so he doesn’t really give us many details to work with.I don’t want to leave a wrong impression. I didn’t dislike this book, but I didn’t really like it either. That could partly be because I had to read it in several long sittings instead of taking a day per section. But personally, I found it slightly annoying that the majority of each section just restated what we had just read in the Bible. Also because of the devotional format, the author extracted a single lesson from multiple chapters or whole books for daily meditation. They were good valid thoughts. I just found it hard to focus on his one thought while still trying to process what I had learned in the Bible. I can’t say I would recommend it for those reasons, but it might do more for others.I received this as a free ARC through NetGalley. No favorable review was required. It was my pleasure to provide my honest opinions.

5 stars“Bible scholar Ron Rhodes, author of the popular book The End Times in Chronological Order, now presents a spectacular bird's-eye view of God's larger work—past, present, and future. You'll see.”A Chronological Tour Through The Bible is an in-depth and easy to understand study of the entire Bible in 365 days. Each day has a long and a short Bible reading followed by a key concept, the big picture, the transformational truth, a verse for meditation and a question to ponder. The format of this book is ideal for study alone or as a group. The various breakdowns of topics allow for an easier grasp of some of the harder to understand Biblical truths. I have been a daily Bible reader for 4 years, yet I learned so much from this book. Rhodes has a true gift in making the Bible easily understandable for all.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a deeper look into the Bible in an easy to understand and read manner.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Harvest House Publishers through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.#AChronologicalTourThroughTheBible #NetGalley

A Chronological Tour Through the Bible was very well organized, easy to read with clear and concise information. This book is meant to be studied with your favorite Bible as a daily devotion with prayer and reflection. Chronological categories are divided into nine Eras of time from Era 1 Undated time - 1800 BC to Era 9 The Early Church 30 - 95 AD. The author gives descriptions, interpretation, applications, scripture readings, chronology based on history and archeological data. Each days chapter includes key concept, the big picture, transformational truth, a verse for meditation, and a question to ponder. Loved that the author prayed for each reader, suggested praying before each Bilble study and the postscript that lists key truths for every book of the Bible. I thought this book is an excellent guide for growth in a Christian‘s spiritual life. I think it would be perfect for personal use or even as a group study with a weekly discussion. My thanks to the author, the publisher and netgalley for making this book available to me to read and review.

If you, like me, have tried to read the books of the Bible in a chronological order, you have probably had to flick about and research a lot! The power of reading the chapters in time sequence goes without question. It gives context to the happenings and integrates what happens, psalms have more meaning, how Jonah fits into the bigger historical story and so on.In addition to this unbelievably helpful part of A chronological tour through the Bible, Ron Rhodes highlights five aspects each day coinciding with the interlinking verses. He shares the key concept, the big picture, a transformational truth, a verse for meditation and a question to ponder. The Bible readings plus this takes on average 5 minutes so it’s perfect for a once-a-day check in which will get you through the entire Bible in 365.Given it’s length (it’s a year’s journey to do it properly), I read sections of it and intend to read it fully as the year continues. The overarching descriptions about each era are insightful and the timelines are particularly helpful. In the postscript, each book of the Bible is summarised in a sentence.I thoroughly enjoyed the 25% I’ve completed and highly recommend it as a way to read the Bible start to finish as well as a resource book. It’s a five out of five on the en-JOY-ment scale.

Music. Slice of life. Underdogs. Serendipitous romance. Small shops. England. Is this not the ingredients to indie films? I mean can we just hire Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks for the movie right now? From the very first page I just knew that I had something special. The writing is so gorgeous that I could cry. It has the perfect balance of humor and seriousness. The words flow so seemlessly and the descriptions of emotions and everyday occaurances raged from poeticly tanganle to excitingly relatable. My heart moved, my lips smiled, and I just fully enjoyed my time reading this book. And this extends to the characters. Oh, how I adore the foolish and charming Kit. Admired the memories of Peg. And shared a core of myself with Frank himself, our main character. Each and everyone of them felt so real. Like characters in a sitcom, they have quirks and irks but, time and time again come back together. The combined being of this book, every page, every word, every character, every bit of it has stored itself inside my heart. It has also opened my ears to listening to music in the way Frank expresses it. This book can seriously change your life. And it only misses the five star rating due to the last chapters in which the plot got a little too quirky and jumps 21 years. But don't get me wrong, if this was a movie it'd be the cutest thing and go right up there with sick day films such as Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. Additionally, the very end is quite sweet and makes me feel all tucked in and happy. So please do read this book if you want that feel good love story with a slice of life feeling.Thank you Penguin Random House for the e-book arc of this!

Author Rachel Joyce has created a cute but flawed plot that mixes music, romance, and a shop in a down and out section of 1980's London. Toss in a few more ingredients, most notably a supporting cast out of a 1940's Frank Capra movie, and how can "The Music Shop" miss? Well, it just does.Things start well. Nice guy Frank sells only vinyl records in his dingy little store despite the explosive advent of CD's and the digital world. All his life Frank has loved two things - music, all types, from Beethoven to the Beatles, and vinyl records. He has sound booths where customers can don headsets and listen to 78's and 45's (but no cassettes, please) to their heart's content. And some of his always colorful neighbors and fellow shop owners come in not knowing what they want, but Frank listens to them and their problems, and always has a solution, whether it be Vivaldi or ABBA or Peggy Lee or Bach or all four. Then SHE walks by outside, and faints on the sidewalk. She has big eyes and likes the color green, and she can fix anything. So she pops in every so often and fixes things and listens to Frank. They bond quickly, Frank and Ilse, his younger little miss from Germany. Over music. And then nothing happens. There's lots of music, lots of amusing anecdotes about some of the Great Composers, but nothing happens. Frank has issues. He was raised by a single parent, his Mom, who loved only two things, music and no, not vinyl, but sex. Frank was not to use the Mother word; she was Peg and answered only to Peg. So, Frank, 40ish now, is scared of relationships. We're still not at the 50% point of the book and I'm annoyed and bored with Frank. And it drags on.The ending is OK. Maybe Capra would have liked it, but he would have completely redone the middle half of the book. And he would have whispered into Joyce's ear that you can't do 40's and 80's together, you have to pick one, or it becomes too much like walking into a movie theatre today and seeing Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant jousting over the hand of Keira Knightley.

MusicMusic finds our emotions, hidden way down deep under layers of protection placed there by our surface selves, and brings those emotions back up to the light of day to be lived in full color. Sometimes too strong, sometimes only just beginning to bud, these emotions deliver impact to life's moments.Rachel Joyce taps into emotions with words as easily as stringing together letters yet in a way that frequently surprises and pounds into your life as nothing else. If you are looking for a light or deep read with some mystery, drama, humor, bittersweet, or comedy thrown in for good measure, this will be your next book. There will be moments of surprised delight when you find yourself rereading it loud a particular phrase.... ha!!! Bwahahaha!!! you'll say.Take a moment, step inside The Music Store. You'll be glad you did.Even after the story ends, your imagination will continue to turn the pages to see what happens next.

Frank runs a dying record store in the beginning of the '80's, when CD's are rising and Frank refuses to sell anything other than vinyl. He has difficulty building relations, due to his flawed childhood. He gets "saved" by a mysterious customer, a beautiful lady in a green dress. The background of the story is nice; the many references to all kinds of music will please the aficionados and there are some colorful characters to spice the story up. But I couldn’t really get into the story. Frank is a very boring person and Rachel Joyce, apparently in an effort to postpone the romance as long as possible (sort of a requisite ingredient in these type of stories, of course), makes him – and also his lover Ilse – act so strangely and illogically that you just want to give them a good shake: are you guys for real? The improbable and soppy ending seems to have been written with the goal of a Meg Ryan romantic movie scenario in mind. The book is not totally bad, but I had hoped for a sort of High Fidelity story, but believe me, Nick Hornby’s novel is much sharper, funnier and believable and blows this book totally out of the water. No more Rachel Joyces for me, I’m afraid.

Reading this book was the most fun I've had in years. The amusingly complex characters and crazily tense relationships are strung together by amazing descriptions of all styles of music. I read most of it on my phone in the subway and loved it.Author of: Not From the Stars (His Majesty's Theatre Book 1)
